The following already existing results provide as inspiration for the bio.display project.

GFPixel

Summary

GFPixel is a living portrait, a ”painting” made of genetically transformed bacteria. The organisms are cultivated in about 4000 Petri-dishes which are then arranged as a portrait. The Green Fluorescent Protein emits the green light that enables the creation of the portrait. In different parts of the painting the GFP-gene is switched ON or OFF by exposing it to UV light.

Relation to bio.display

Whereas the pixels in GFPixel are static, bio.display aims to be a dynamic display.

LIFE – fluid, invisible, inaudible

Summary

The installation method is inspired by the work LIFE – fluid, invisible, inaudible… by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Shiro Takatani, displayed at NTT ICC in Tokyo, Japan between September 15th and November 4th, 2007.

Relation to bio.display

The installation may look very similar – having a square-shaped aquarium hanging from the ceiling, and the visitors looking at it from below, possibly lying on the floor.
